When Confronting the Opponent on a Narrow Path, the Boldest Will Prevail
If two people or armies cross paths on a narrow road, the boldest will prevail. This was part of the military thinking of Zhao She, a well-known general of the State of Zhao during the Warring States Period. He meant that if one meets the enemy and cannot avoid a confrontation, one must rouse one's fighting spirit, courage and resolve to win, and that this is actually what makes victory possible. The term has the similar meaning to the expression "fighting is based on courage." The spirit also applies to other periods of difficulty or hardship.
Zhao She said, "The path ahead is long, steep and narrow. Like two mice fighting in a burrow, the bravest will win." (Records of the Historian)
